RELOCATION TIPS
Moving into a new home is always stressful. You must worry about moving your belongings safely from your current home to your new one. This is even more stressful when moving internationally. You can’t take all your belongings with you on your plane ride or you can’t always drive a moving truck to your new country. International relocations can be quite expensive because of this, but here are some tips on how to make your move easier:
- Plan Early: Do not wait until the last minute to start packing your belongings. Starting your packing and planning early on will help you keep organized, receive lower shipping costs, and ensure all your belongings make it to your new home.
- Budget: Moving overseas is expensive. Save as much money as you can. Budget money out of every paycheck to save for moving costs. Estimate your projected costs and add an extra 10-15% for unexpected costs.
- Strategically Pack: Shipping items via plane or boat can result in your items becoming damaged. Waters can be choppy; the weather can be turbulent, and this can cause your belongings to shift and bang around during transport. Pack your items in boxes tightly so that they don’t bang around during transport and become damaged.
- Find Free Packing Supplies: International moving likely means that you will need to pack all your things and then more that you forgot you even had. This will require a significant amount of packing supplies such as boxes, tape, and bubble wrap. Reach out to friends and family and ask them for their extra or leftover moving supplies. This will save you a lot of money.
- Sell Some Stuff: It will make your move much easier to have fewer items to ship while also bringing in some extra cash. Sell your old furniture, appliances, electronics, and other items that you do not want to bring with you or will no longer need.
